On 20 February 1624, aged fifteen, he matriculated at New College, Oxford, where he was one of the college clerks. Migrating to Queen's College and then to St Edmund's, Bate graduated BA in 1626 and MA and BA in 1629, the latter giving him licence to practise around Oxford, and DM in 1637. Early observers may have labelled him a puritan, but when Charles I established the court in Oxford Bate became a member of the royal party, and was made physician to the king. Settling in London by 1639 Bate became a fellow of the College of Physicians in 1640 and served as censor in 1645, 1646, and 1648, and was named an elect in 1657. In 1656 he was part of the board of physicians which recommended the establishment of college of physicians in Edinburgh. However, Bate is best known for his published defence of Charles I in his confrontation with parliament. The Regall Apology, or, The Declaration of the Commons, written in English, was first published in Paris and London in 1648" [ODNB] and is here offered in the first edition. Bound with 2 other Royalist publications from 1648; Filmer's GRAND INQUEST [TavBooks ID #39974] & Claredon's ANSWER [TavBooks ID #39997]. Price is for the one volume containing all 3 titles.
