Preliminary blank with period list of contents [i.e. the 3 titles bound together]. [2], 92, [2 (blank)] pp. Royal arms device to t.p. Decorative initial capital letters. Head- tailpieces. 4to: A - M^4. 7-5/8" x 5-3/4". T.p. with period inked annotation quoting a Roman Tribune regarding 'force of armes'. Slight bow to boards. Front joint starting at top 1-1/2". Spine gilt flaking to a small degree. A VG copy. Bate, "physician and author, was born in Maids Moreton, Buckinghamshire, in 1608, the son of John Bate of Burton. On 20 February 1624, aged fifteen, he matriculated at New College, Oxford, where he was one of the college clerks. Migrating to Queen's College and then to St Edmund's, Bate graduated BA in 1626 and MA and BA in 1629, the latter giving him licence to practise around Oxford, and DM in 1637. Early observers may have labelled him a puritan, but when Charles I established the court in Oxford Bate became a member of the royal party, and was made physician to the king. Settling in London by 1639 Bate became a fellow of the College of Physicians in 1640 and served as censor in 1645, 1646, and 1648, and was named an elect in 1657. In 1656 he was part of the board of physicians which recommended the establishment of college of physicians in Edinburgh. However, Bate is best known for his published defence of Charles I in his confrontation with parliament.
