Originally known as a guohua (traditionalist) painter, by the 1960s he was also renowned as a modern impressionist and expressionist painter. Further, Chang is regarded as one of the most gifted master forgers of the twentieth century.. [and it is suggested] that many notable collections of Chinese art contains a forgery by the master painter" [Wiki]. "This book, which represents the epitome of Chang Dai-chien's achievements since 1944, contains one hundred and thirty reproductions of his landscapes, human figures, plants, flowers, birds, animals and fish in both the elaborate and the hsieh yi styles. The pictures are arranged in chronological order to enable the reader to see more clearly how the master, after having already attained in his middle age a dizzy height in Chinese art, continued on to reach even greater heights." [Foreword]. While well represented institutionally, the work somewhat uncommon in the trade.
