Description: Philadelphia: Carey Lea and Blanchard, 1838. 1st US edition (American Imprints 49640; NCBEL III, 716 [noting a 1 volume Philadelphia edition]). Not found in Sadleir, nor Wolff. Period brown half-calf with brown marbled paper boards. 2 volumes (204; 200, 4 pp). Aderts last 4 pp of V. 2. 12mo. 7-3/16" x 4-1/4". General binding wear, with spine lettering mostly worn away. Faint bookplate remnants to V1 front paste-down. Some foxing & staining to paper. Withal, a VG set of a scarce title. Like Marryat, Chamier a one-time naval officer who was placed on the retirement list in 1833. Subsequently, he also pursued a literary career, publishing his somewhat popular Life of a Sailor in 1832; his greatest contribution to the life of letters, as seen from today's vantage, is his editorship & continuation of William James' Naval History. [ODNB]. All of Chamier's literary works are now uncommon; OCLC shows just 7 holdings of this edition.
