BAINES, EDWARD, JUN., History of the Cotton Manufacture in Great Britain. With a notice of its early history in the East, and in all the quarters of the globe; a description of the great mechanical inventions, which have caused its unexampled extension in Britain; and a
view of the present state of the manufacture, and the condition of the classes engaged in its several departments. London, H. Fisher, R. Fisher, and P. Jackson, n.d. [1835, but see below] 15 plates [see below], 11 woodcuts in text, half-title,18, (9)-544pp., 8vo., publisher's cloth somewhat worn and marked, neatly rebacked with original spine laid down. Frontispiece with waterstain extending into image, some plates with pale spots of foxing. ¶ A puzzling copy. BMC and all other sources consulted catalogue the book as (1835) and no other edition, but several plates in this copy are dated between 1837 and 1841. The prelims list 15 plates, all present as listed except that a second illustration of a power loom is substituted for a view. Other copies apparently have18 plates, otherwise the collation is identical. For Sir Edward Baines [1800-1890], journalist, economist and M.P., see DNB.
