Title: Children of the Broken Treaty: Canada's lost Promise and one girl's dream New edition
Description: Regina, Saskatchewan, University of Regina Press 978-0-88977-497-1. (ISBN: 978-0-88977-497-1). 2017, new edition. (Mass market paperback) Very good. xix, 344pp. 8vo. The story of the incomparable Shannes Koostachin, a 14 year old Cree First Nation activist from Attawapiskat in Northern Ontario, who started the largest youth-led children's rights campaign in Canadian history: Students Helping Students. Her efforts led to awareness of the unacceptable conditions and standards in First Nations schools and in 2009, led to the government's promise to build a new school in Attawapiskat. The first proper school in 14 years, Kattawapiskak, was built and opened on the reserve in 2014. Shannon was 14 when she moved 600 km away from home to join her sister, Serena, to obtain their high school education. The girls lived for a year with the author, who is the New Democratic Member of Paliament for Timmins-James Bay. This book tells the narrative of Shannen's campaign and the history of Indigenous education. Black and white photographs. This new edition looks at the inquiry into the Indigenous youth suicide epidemic in Thunder Bay, the impact of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and looks at why the commitment of the Trudeau government to Indigenous communities remains unfulfilled. Winner of the Onario History Teacher's Prize, a Foreword Reviews' IndieFAB Award and 2 Saskatchewan Book Awards. Black and white photographs. Fine copy.
