Title: Diary of Alexander Jaffray, Provost of Aberdeen, One of the Scottish Commissioners to King Charles II., And a Member of Cromwell's Parliament: To Which Are Added, Particulars of His Subsequent Life, Given in Connexion with Memoirs of the Rise, Progress, and Persecutions, of the People Called Quakers, in the North of Scotland; Among Whom He Became One of the Earliest Members
Description: London, Published by Darton & Harvey; Alexander Brown & Co.; William Whyte and Co.. 1834, 2nd edition. (hardcover) Very good. xxx, [4], 592pp. 8vo. Polished half-calf over plain paper boards. Spine with bands, date in gilt at foot of spine; title compartment in dark leather, lettered in gilt. Boards with very little of the usual wear; rubbed, some small spots of superficial surface leather loss from rubbing on spine, as often. Early signs of cracking at front hinge, remaining entirely secure. Overall, binding is quite attractive; tight and square. Edges red speckled. With monogram bookplate to front-pastedown. Our research seems to indicate that this bookplate is from the library of Scottish Liberal politician Lord Colin Campbell (1853-1895). Lord Colin Campbell is noteworthy in Canadian history for being the brother of John Campbell, "Marquis of Lorne," the fourth Governor General of Canada. Occasional marginalia in pencil, notes to blank opposite final page (in Campbell's hand?). Catalog offering of this edition clipped and pasted to first blanco; "1.6 / Low Colin Campbell's Library Helway" written in ink on clipping. An attractive copy of this work, uncommon in an early edition, scarce in such condition. Pseudonym of .
