Title: The Great American Ass; An Autobiography
Description: New York, Brentano's, Inc.. 1926, 1st edition. (hardcover) Very good. [6], 316pp, [2]. Tall 8vo. Mauve smooth-cloth boards, lettering in gilt to spine and top board, publisher's device blindstamped in the bottom corner of the bottom board. Spine deeply-toned, lettering faded; head and tail chipped. Corners bumped. Top-edge coloured dark-green; bottom edge untrimmed. Starting at title page, not split. "The Great American Ass" written by anonymous.. So writ because the author truly wished to remain anonymous because they're an ass? Perhaps the title is best understood through the author's own words (taken entirely in-context, of course): "I wonder, recalling Aunt Annabelle's warning to me and the other children. She recounted scores of instances where our kinsfolk had died of locked bowels, due to neglect of purgatives. And we would each and all be stricken and perish if we didn't keep that one function in mind" (p.5). Surely that is the reason for this publication! To keep that one function of the Great American Ass in mind! The publisher's note states that "this is an authentic autobiography of a descendant of a Puritan family. The vibrant livingness of its pages it unfailingly conveyed to the reader"..I call rubbish. Hogwash. A load of drivel. Rather, this book was written "to control another bad American habit, an amendment to their venerable constipation" (p.6)! The Great American Ass, indeed. Please note: This is NOT a biography of that 45th Buffoon of the Great U. S. Of A.
