Title: Peking To Paris.
Description: Harmondsworth : Penguin Books, 1986.. Across Two Continents In An Itala. New edition. xxvi + 357 p, illustrated with 1 map, and 16 pages photogr. SOFTCOVER: (Orig. Paperback. VERY GOOD) ¶ First published in 1908 Revised edition first published by Alcove Press 1972 Published in Penguin Books 1986. In 1907, 'La Matin' issued an extraordinary challege to its readers: "Will anyone agree to go, this summer, from Peking to Paris by motor-car?" Among the applicants were Prince Scipione Borghese, an enterprising aristocrat, his devoted chauffeur Ettore, and Luigi Barzini, whose task it was to telegraph news of their epic trip back to Europe. This wonderful and amusing account of 'the maddest motor-car race of all time' tells the story of that incredible adventure, omitting none of the bizarre details - the telegraph office in the middle of the Gobi Desert, through which no telegram had ever passed; the Chinese Mandarin stealing a ride in the Prince's car, his pigtail fluttering in the wind; and the delicate negotiations with Mongolian chieftains suspicious of this novel form of transport.
