Title: Middlemarch. A study of provincial life.
Description: Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1873 (new edition), 4 vols.; (viii+)410pp., small 8vo, marbled front and end pages, all edges marbled, half calf on marbled boards, 5 raised bands on spine with gilt decorated ornaments and letters, dark red-brown morocco titles. Mild foxing to first and last few pp., including (half) title, minimal wear at top spine and upper (calf inforced) corners. Highly attractive, scarce set in this near fine early edition. ¶ With this novel, George Eliot's reputation reached its summit and it is generally considered as one of the greatest works of English literature. The first edition was published in 1871-72, and our set is to be considered as the 2nd edition (bearing tiny booksellers/publisher's label of Eland & Exeter in the left upper corner of each volume's front endpaper).
