Title: The pictorial Bible being the Old and New Testament according to the authorised version.
Description: London: W. and R. Chambers, 1855 (new edition, 4 vols.); together 2739pp., all vols. with extensive footnotes, profusely illustrated with steel engravings and woodcuts, vol. iv with index, large 8vo, coloured end-papers, all edges gilt, embossed full leather bindings w. raised bands and gilt lettering. All vols., in particular vol. iv, expertly restored (see below), resulting in a splendid set of this very fine title. ¶ the subtitle continues: 'Illustrated with steel engravings and many hundred wood-cuts representing landscape scenes, and subjects of natural history, costume and antiquities, with original notes explanatory of passages connected with the history, geoghraphy, natural history, literature and antiquities of the sacred scriptures, with additional notes, based on the discoveries of recent travellers.' The 1st edition (1847) of this well-researched Bible was one of the later and most important works of John Kitto (1804-1854), self-taught biblical scholar of such reputation that in 1844 the German University of Giessen conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Divinity, and his city of birth, Plymouth, honoured him by giving its community colege his name. John Kitto not only was a name in church history but also an inspiring person, because of his original poverty and his total deafness since he was 12 years old. Re. the condition of this set: expert restoration of normal wear of all volumes and successful repair of vol. iv which had its front and back covers detached and taped as a consequence. A small part of this volume's spine bottom was lost and restored inconspicuously. Ask for more details; a written and photographic report of the restoration is available and delivered with purchase of this exclusive set.
