The doctor Joseph-Charles Mardrus (1868-1949) was the first, after Galland, to translate the oriental sories of 'Thousand and One Night' in the French language. His publication was illustrated by eminent artists of his time like Léon Carré, Antione Bourdelle, Kees van Dongen and many others. This well illustrated not only presents the story behind Mardrus and his translations but also documents the illustrations by the many artists.
