Description: London, The Linnean Society of London, 1875-1878. Large 4to (29.0 x 23.0 cm). Titles to the parts. 422 pp.; 47 lithographed plates, of which several in chromolithography, or with additional hand-colouring. Contemporary buckram. Spine with gilt ornamental lines, gilt title and vignette. Edges speckled red. = One of the most important botanical periodicals - with numerous fine monographs - and certainly one of the best-illustrated too. This is the start of the first fully botanical volume. In previous volumes, botany and zoology were combined. Includes, for instance, Francis Darwin On the hygroscopic mechanism by which certain seeds are enabled to bury themselves in the ground, Knight's Contribution to Lichenographia of New Zealand, Berkeley's List of Fungi from Brisbane, Queensland, and several papers by John Miers, etc., etc.. All with fine illustrations and many with new species. Three more parts were published before completing the volume. Front board detached, top of spine cover lost. Library bookplate on the front pastedown, and stamp of the same in the margin of the title and a few plates. Otherwise a good copy. Cat. BM(NH), p. 1151.
