Title: Manuel de conchyliologie et de paléontologie conchyliologique.
Description: Paris, Victor Masson, 1859-1862. Two volumes in one. 835 pp. [508, 327]; 4,943 (!) fine woodcuts of which 56 are full colour using a unique printing technique, and two hand-coloured engraved title vignettes of Conus adamsonii. Contemporary full calf. Spine with five raised, gilt-bordered bands and title in gilt. Marbled endpapers. = An attractively bound copy of a fine illustrated conchyological work which is exceptional because of the full colour printing technique developed or applied by a printer named Rémond. This made it possible to have black and white and full colour figures on the same page, and on text pages. The superb but costly printing is often mistaken for hand-colouring. With a handwritten dedication, dated 1865, on the first half-title. Also on the first half-title a stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020). Some slight toning and offsetting, as usual; otherwise a very good copy. Nissen ZBI, 878.
