Title: Report of the Trustees of the Museum of Comparative Zoology. 1861-1900.
Description: Harvard, MA, The Trustees of the Museum of Comparative Zoölogy, 1861-1900. 40 reports in two volumes. Thick 8vo (23.5 x 14.5 cm). Contemporary uniform red, gilt-bordered half-morocco over marbled boards. Spines with five raised bands, gilt vignettes and title. Top edges gilt. Printed wrappers bound in. = A rarely seen uninterrupted set, from the start, up to the year 1900. Even individual reports are very scarce. These volumes deal mainly with the activities of personel and associates, acquisition of new material (zoological object arranged systematically), donations of books, biological specimens, etc. ; and laboratory activities, building activities regarding the museum and biological stations, etc., etc. From 1875 onwards, Annual Report of the curator to the Committee of the Museum was added to the title. Still later, the Trustees were dropped from the title. Illustrations on plates or folded charts include floor plans and new buildings. An average yearly report contains some 30 to 50 pages. Provenance: an autograph of the Bostonian entomologist Samuel Henshaw (1852-1941) on the front free endpaper recto, and his armorial bookplate "Esse quam videri" mounted on front pastedowns. A stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) on the front free endpaper recto. Boards rubbed at hinges and edges, otherwise very good.
