DSB: "The chief work of this volcanistic period was the "Wärmelehre des Innern unseres Erdkörpers" (1837) by Bischof. The volume reduction observed during the cooling of melted basalt inspired Elie de Beaumont to propose that folded mountain chains arise from wrinkling of the surface of the contracted earth...
