Description: Leipzig, L. A. Kittler, 1906. 8vo (23.1 x 14.9 cm). 175 pp. Original printed wrappers. = Heinrich Gaetke, or Gätke (1814-1897) was a German ornithologist and painter. "In 1837 he travelled to the island of Heligoland for the first time. From 1841 he decided to live there and from 1843 he studied birds on the island. He studied ornithology and made a collection. In 1891 a station was established in Heligoland and the Prussian government acquired his collection for the North sea museum. The collection was destroyed in 1944 by a bombing (Wikipedia). One chapter, written by the German lepidopterologist Adalbert Seitz, deals with Gätke's studies on butterflies and moths. Published as Sonderheft to the 54th volume of the famous Journal für Ornithologie. Rare. Uncut. Old owner's inscription in front wrapper's top margin. Wrappers partly creased and chipped in the margins, spine near-perished, otherwise a very good copy. Not in any major bibliography.
