Title: A list of North American Lepidoptera and key to the literature of this order of insects.
Description: Washington, DC, United States National Museum, 1902. 8vo. xix, 723 pp. Original green cloth with gilt title on the spine and gilt pictorial vignette on the front board. = A seldom-seen original bound copy, moreover without any library markings. Only the name of a former owner, the botanist Harry Milliken Jennison (1885-1940), in an old hand on the front free endpaper recto. "Although he did not publish extensively, Jennison produced several quality works on the flora of Tennessee which were often illustrated by his own colour photographs, such as "Checklist of the Spring Wildflowers and Ferns of Tennessee" (1929) and "Flora of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park" (1939). Unfortunately, a fire at the University of Tennessee in 1934 destroyed all of Jennison's plant specimens and his manuscripts. In the final six years of his life, however, he managed to amass a collection of several thousand herbarium sheets from that state, a testament to his dedication and patience. A member of numerous local and national scientific societies, Jennison was president of the Great Smokey Mountains Hiking Club and secretary of the Great Smokey Mountains Conservation Association" (Global plants website). Light wear to the boards, otherwise very good. Perhaps the best copy currently available.
