Title: Drawings of the Corona from photographs at total eclipses from 1896 to 1922.
Description: London, The Royal Society, 1927. Large 4to (30.5 x 23.2 cm). 26 pp. 12 plates including 11 printed drawings, and one set of four photographs, all on glossy paper, mounted. Original printed wrappers. = A well-produced work showing observations made by various astronomers in Sumatra, Mauritius, Sfax (Tunesia), Minsk (Belarus), Christmas Island (Indian Ocean), Brazil, Labrador, etc. It includes the famous 1919 eclipse, observed in Brazil and Principe (off western Africa), that confirmed the gravitational lensing of light, predicted in Einstein's general theory of relativity. Edited by Sir Frank Dyson (1868-1939), the ninth Royal Astronomer, in charge between 1910 to 1933 and one of the observers. Earlier Royal Astronomers include Flamsteed, Halley, and Maskelyne - all regular contributors to the Society's Philosophical Transactions, of which this is an offprint of Series A, volume 226. Wrappers a bit sunned; spine cover somewhat worn at ends; otherwise a very good copy, with the plates clean and bright.
