Description: London, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1883. 4to (29.2 x 24.6 cm). Half-title, title page (to the volume), 142 pp.; 55 plates and four woodcuts in the text. Original dark green blind-stamped and pebbled cloth. Spine with gilt title. Dark brown endpapers. = Brady's paper is the first and by far most extensively illustrated monograph in volume VIII of the reports on scientific data and specimens collected during the grandest and most influential circumglobal scientific cruise, and the largest natural history endeavour of the 19th century, published in over 50 volumes dealing with numerous kinds of - mostly marine - life forms. The British zoologist and professor of natural history at the Hancock Museum in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, George Stewardson Brady (1832-1921) was one of the foremost ostracod and copepod specialists of the late 19th century. The other two works included in volume eight have 76 pages, nine plates and one woodcut (Calcarea); and 169 pages, 13 plates and three woodcuts (systematics of the Cirripedia). A very good copy. Uncut. Even the inner joints are intact - usually they are cracked due to the heavy book block. Four millimeters of lower outer corner of four leaves folded before being cut, thus now with a tiny bit of paper protruding which normally would have been removed. Otherwise very good, clean. Rare, especially in this excellent state. Nissen ZBI, 4754.
