Title: Melanchthon. Zehn Vorträge von Hanns Christof Brennecke, Walter Sparn, Günther R. Schmidt, Risto Saarinen, Volker Honemann, Harmut Fritz, Dietrich Pirson, Reinhard Slenczka, Eike Wolgast, Christof Gestrich.
Description: Erlangen, Universitätsbund Erlangen-Nürnberg, 1998. 8vo (24.0 x 16.7 cm). 216 pp., frontispiece portrait. White, printed cloth in pictorial dust jacket. = A seldom seen scholarly volume on the live, times, and works of the German philosopher Philip Melanchton (1497-1560). He was "a German Lutheran reformer, collaborator with Martin Luther, the first systematic theologian of the Protestant Reformation, intellectual leader of the Lutheran Reformation, and an influential designer of educational systems. He stands next to Luther and John Calvin as a reformer, theologian, and molder of Protestantism. After Luther himself, he is the primary founder of Lutheranism. ... Melanchthon along with Luther denounced what they believed was the exaggerated cult of the saints, asserted justification by faith, and denounced the coercion of the conscience in the sacrament of penance (confession and absolution) by the Catholic Church, which they believed could not offer certainty of salvation." (Wikipedia). The frontispiece is of Melanchthon, painted by Lucas Cranach the younger. Published as Erlanger Forschungen Reihe A. Geisteswissenschaften Band 85. Two labels on the dust jacket, stamp on title, otherwise a near mint copy.
