Title: Matériaux pour la faune du Congo. Tome I. Poissons nouveaux. Fascicule I-II. [of six].
Description: Bruxelles, État Indépendant du Congo, Musée du Congo [Imprimerie Charles vande Weghe], 1898. Folio (36.3 x 27.7 cm). 37 (20; 17) pp., 19 (9; 10) lithographed plates (by P. J. Smit or J. Green) of which ten are double-sized. Loose in original uniform printed portfolios. = A fin set of the start of this important publication on new and remarkable species and genera of fishes of Central Africa. The fine, large engravings are by John Green, and by the famous Dutch natural history illustrator Joseph Smit (1836-1929) who worked in London most of his life, and whose work is at least on par with that of his even better known contemporary compatriot, John Gerrard Keulemans. Old library stamp in the top-outer corner of both portfolios. Text pages of second part spotted, the plates very good, clean. Complete copies are very rare, but single parts are very uncommon too. Dean I, p. 164 (quite inaccurate, as if Dean never saw this publication); Nissen ZBI, 493.
