Title: Histoire naturelle des crustacés, contenant leur description et leurs moeurs; avec figures dessinées d'après nature. Seconde édition, mise au niveau des connaissances actuelles par M. A. G. Desmarest. Tome premier, tome second. [Complete].
Description: Paris, Roret, 1830. Two volumes in two. 12mo (13.1 x 8.1 cm). 634 [I: 328, II: 306], 36 pp.; large, folded table; double-suite of 24 different [I: 1-9, 1bis, 3bis, 5bis; II: 10-18, 13bis, 15bis, 18bis] engraved plates - one finely hand-coloured and one plain each - for a total of 48 plates. Contemporary uniform half calf over marbled boards. Spines with two black morocco labels with gilt titles, gilt lines and embossed vignettes. Marbled endpapers, marbled edges. = Very rare double-suite set, with plain AND finely hand-coloured plates. Originally this work formed a part of a series of Histoires naturelles published by Deterville as Suites de Buffon and written by the French zoologist, botanist, diplomat, and administrator Louis Augustin Guillaume Bosc (1759-1828). This edition, however, was published after his death and much edited by Desmarest, containing later observations as well as the six bis-plates that Nissen erroneously thought to be part of the original edition. The presence of both plain and finely coloured plates ensures that both the natural colouring, and the finer morphological details of each specimen are optimally represented. One plate is always plain and therefore represented double-plain here. Top end of spine cover of volume II chipped, some light, mostly marginal spots, otherwise a very good, clean set. Nissen ZBI, 478.
