Description: Paris, Firmin-Didot, 1856. Very large 8vo (28.5 x 19.5 cm). [iv], 360, [iv], 62 pp., numerous woodcuts [on 48 numbered plates, and 135 on text pages]. Later half cloth over marbled boards, gilt title on the spine. = From the well-illustrated series by and based upon Buffon, Lacépède, Cuvier, etc. This part deals with the complete herpetology, with 24 plates, and ichthyology, also with 24 plates. The plate order is erratic (plate 9 acts as frontispiece), however fully in accordance to the binder's instructions. According to Nissen this part (the 12th) was published in 1857. The number of pages he quotes is widely incorrect. A few weak spots but generally quite a clean copy in an attractive binding. Rare in this state. Nissen ZBI, 4620.
