Description: Paris, Octave Doin, 1884. 8vo (23.8 x 15.7 cm). viii, 184 pp.; 52 text figures, five plates (two partly coloured). Contemporary grained half calf over marbled boards. Gilt lines and title on the spine. Original printed wrappers bound in. = An important microbiological and mycological work by the French embryologist Édouard-Gérard Balbiani (1823-1899). "In Paris he studied natural sciences under famed zoologist Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville (1777-1850). In 1874 he became professor of embryogeny at the Collège de France, where he remained until his death in 1899. Balbiani is known for his work in microbiology as well as his studies in embryology. He is credited with the discovery of sexual organ development in Chironomus which eventually led to the general theory on the autonomy of the germ cell (Wikipedia). Pictorial bookplate on the front paste-down, old library stamp on the front wrapper. Flyleaves discoloured, some scattered foxing to two plates, otherwise a very good copy. Not in Volbracht (neither in the 2017 supplement).
