Nares, R.N., F.R.S. and captain Frank Tourle Thomson, R.N. prepared under the superintendence of the late Sir. C. Wyville Thomson, Knt., F.R.S., &c. and now of John Murray one of the naturalists of the expedition. Zoology - Vol. XXIV. Report on the Crustacea Macrura dredged by H.M.S. Challenger during the years 1873-1876.
Description: London, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1888. In two volumes [text and atlas]. Large 4to (31.8 x 25.4 cm). xc, 942 pp.; 156 lithographed plates [1-150, 10a, 11a, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d, 12e], of which three tinted, and 76 text illustrations. Original green, embossed cloth. Gilt title on the spine. = This monograph of the crabs is one of most extensively illustrated reports on the scientific data and specimens collected during the grandest and most influential circumglobal scientific cruise, and the largest natural history endeavour of the 19th century, the famoumous "Challenger" Expedition. Written and, largely, illustrated by the dentist and zoologist Charles Spence Bate (1819-1889). With Charles Darwin he shared an interest in barnacles about which they had a frequent exchange of letters. However, Bate's had a broader interest in crustaceans, as shown by this hefty monograph which was published shortly before his untimely death. Many species of lobsters and shrimps are described as new. Bookblocks intact, but cover of the plate volume detached, and that of the text volume missing. Needs rebinding - and it's worth it. Library label on front pastedowns, library stamps on titles. Otherwise very good, clean. Nissen ZBI, 251, 4754.
