Description: Paris, [Arthus Bertrand], 1833-[1834]. 8vo (21.8 x 14.2 cm). 192 pp. Contemporary marbled boards. Spine with red morocco label with first author's name in gilt. = The complete cryptogamy text, as published, and in fact all the botanical text that was published. Based upon material collected during an expedition by the French naturalist and explorer Charles Bélanger (1805-1881), and important for its early descriptions of plants from the Caucasus, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Myanmar (Burma), the Cape Province, and the islands of Java, Mauritius, Réunion and Saint Helena. Bélanger wrote the text on Musci, Hepaticae, and lichens, Bory de Saint-Vincent on Pteridophyta and algae; and the text on fungi is by J. P. F. Camille Montagne although he is not mentioned in the section title. The Atlas, with 31 plates, is not included. Provenance: this copy once was in the library of the German pteridologist Georg Heinrich Mettenius (1823-1866) - his name written in the top margin of the front free endpaper recto.
