Title: Les végétaux utiles de l'Afrique tropicale Française. VI. Les kolatiers & les noix de Kola.
Description: Paris, Augustin Challamel, 1911. 8vo (23.7 x 15.7 cm). xxiv, 484 pp., two large, folded, coloured maps, 16 phototype plates and 52 text figures (mostly page-sized plates) and maps. Contemporary half cloth over marbled boards. Spine with gilt ornaments and title. Marbled edges. Original printed wrappers bound in. = Rare, important and richly illustrated monograph by the French botanist Auguste [Jean Baptiste] Chevalier (1873-1956), and his compatriot, the pharmacist Émile [Constant] Perrot (1867-1951) on the variability and distribution of the African cola plants. Signed by the first author and dedicated to the famous German botanist Prof. [Heinrich Gustav] Adolf Engler (1844-1930), with the latter's botanical bookplate on the front paste-down. Engler was a student of Heinrich Göppert and later became the director of the botanical gardens in Breslau and prolific writer of taxonomical works on tropical botany (e.g. Die pflanzenwelt Ost-Afrikas und der nachbargebiete, published in 1897). "Even now, his system of plant classification, the Engler System, is still used by many herbaria and is followed by writers of many manuals and floras. It is still the only system that treats all 'plants' (in the wider sense, algae to flowering plants) in such depth" (Wikipedia). Tiny cut in wrapper's top edge, minimal shelf-wear, and in all a very good, clean, and well-bound copy.
