Spine with five raised bands and tow gilt-lettered burgundy morocco labels. = Rare first volume of the earliest American science journal which ran upto 1957. Two plates depict a new air-pump. It contains several interesting contributions by James Bowdoin, president of the Academy, Prof. Williams on observation of earthquakes of New England, Caleb Gannett on Aurora Borealis (between 1781-1783); B. Lincoln on several strata of earth and shells on the banks of York-river (Virginia) and subterraneous passage near Carlisle; J. Belknap on large quantities of a fossil substance found at Lebanon (New Hampshire); S. Webster on oil-stone found in Salisbury; John Clark, raising Indian Corn; J. Warren on fruit-trees; John Prince on a new air-pump; Daniel Little on the art of making steel; M. Cutler account of indigenous vegetables in America. The Cutler article, with 98 pages, includes descriptions of dozens of American plants and is the first comprehensive American Materia Medica. Plates with brownish offsetting on the adjacent text or plates. Title page with some browning, edges repaired; text mostly clean.
