Three volumes in three. 8vo (20.2 x 12.0 cm). 1,900 [xlvii, 524; vii, 650; 672] pp., 17 folded engraved plates and one folded engraved hand-coloured geological profile with 11 different colours, one large, folded chart. Contemporary uniform half calf over marbled boards. Spines with gilt-ruled floral lines and red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. = The highly expanded edition, enlarged and considerably altered by the French geologist Amédée Burat (1809-1883). For instance, this edition contains one more volume, and 15 more plates, amongst which are detailed maps and views of the volcanos of the Massif Central, Mount Etna and Mount Vesuvius. Jean-François d'Aubuisson de Voisins (1769-1841) was the first French Wernerian, supporting Werner's the theory that the strata of the earth's crust were formed by depositions from water. Boards a bit rubbed, otherwise a very good, clean set. DSB 1, p. 329; Ward and Carozzi, 88 [only quoting the first, 1819 edition].
