Title: Catalogue of the Madreporian Corals in the British Museum (Nat. Hist.). I-VII. [Complete].
Description: London, The Trustees of the British Museum, 1893-1928. Seven volumes in seven. 4to (32.0 x 24.0 cm). 1,528 pp. [xi, 212; iv, 106; vii, 192; viii, 206; vii, 303; vi, 173; v, 288]; 241 mostly tissue-guarded lithographed plates [35, 33, 34, 14, 35, 17, 72], including collotypes and photographs, 35 text figures. Original uniform blind-stamped brown cloth with gilt title on the spines. Yellow endpapers. First volume with stamps in plate margins. = An important basic monograph on the madrepores, including over 1,100 different species of these often spectacular corals. Started by the British zoologist and coral expert George Brooks (1857-1893), and continued (volume two onwards) by Henry Meyners Bernard (1853-1909), except the last, much later published volume (not recorded by Nissen), which was written by the Indian zoologist George Matthai (1887-1947). The illustrations are excellent. Spine and front board of first volume detached; some wear to the spine foot of a few other volumes; first volume with stamps in plate margins, the others with a publisher's bookplate with a small stamp on the front pastedowns (vol. VII unmarked); otherwise a very good, clean, complete set. Complete sets are very uncommon. Nissen ZBI, 597.
