First edition, first issue. Half-titles not called for; general and volume title, List of Subscrebers [sic], and author's Preface precede fly-title to first piece in volume one; volume title only to other volumes, as called for. Twentieth-century half brown morocco over cloth. All edges gilt. A fair number of pieces appear here for the first time, most notably The Life of Mr. Jonathan Wild the Great and A Journey from This World to the Next; the presence of others serves to establish Fielding's authorship, which might otherwise have remained uncertain.
