Description: Leipzig: Bey Weidmanns Erben und Reich, 1784. 0. Hardcover. Octavo. xii, 645, [xxvi]pp. First edition. Contemporary half sheep over paste-paper boards, somewhat worn. With two fold-out tables and an engraved title-page vignette depicting two cherubs in a lab. With the charming bookplate of L.V. Redman designed by William Walker Alexander. The bookplate depicts an open window looking out towards an old European city with a ship sailing out to sea. The text reads: "To sail beyond the sunset and the stars until I die. Sans sal nul victorie." Suckow was part of an extensive family of scientists, and taught physics, chemistry, and natural history at the University of Heidelberg. This work, on industrial and technical chemistry, is in two parts. The first part is on theory and the second on applied or practical chemistry. The work is rich on bibliographical notes and a bibliography of chemistry covering books and periodicals. A second edition was printed in 1789. Good.
