He was very popular in his lifetime and his novels sold in large numbers, but his reputation has not lasted well. As John William Cousin argues, he depends for his effects on striking situations and powerful descriptions, but has little humour or power of delineating character. With numerous plates and illustrations throughout, by Hablot Browne (under the pseudonym Phiz) and John Franklin. In red half-calf bindings. Externally smart, with some marks to the boards and some minor shelfwear only. Wear to front board of The Star Chamber. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with just the odd spot.
