Anon - Robert the Deuyll a Metrical Romance from an Ancient Illuminated Manuscript

Title: Robert the Deuyll a Metrical Romance from an Ancient Illuminated Manuscript
Description: London, I Herbert, 1798. Leather. This is a scarce lyrical retelling of the medieval legend of Robert the Devil's son , told in verse. Mythology describes Robert as the devil's son, for his mother, despairing of heaven's aid in order to obtain a son, addressed herself to the devil. Beautifully Illustrated throughout, including a frontispiece, depicting Robert through his fictional life. The oldest known account of this legend is a Latin prose narrative by a Dominican friar, Etienne de Bourbon, created in 1250, where which Robert ends his life as a pious hermit. In England the story is treated as metrical romance where instead he marries the emperor's daughter, whose love he has won in his humble disguise, and succeeds to the throne. Armorial bookplate to the front pastedown stating "Anchor Tutissima Virtus" which translates as "Let the power of the Surest". Bound in a half calf binding with paper covered boards, and original spine lable. Externally, a trifle rubbed with front board detached. Rear joint weak and may detach in the post. Internally, binding is tender with detached pages but all present. Bright plates with occasional spotting to pages. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
