John Abernethy - Scarce and Valuable Tracts and Sermons

Title: Scarce and Valuable Tracts and Sermons
Description: London, R Griffiths, 1751. First edition. Leather. The first collected edition of the scarce tracts and sermons, 'occasionally published', of the Presbyterian minister John Abernethy. By the 'author of The Discourses on the Being and Perfections of God&apos. John Abernethy (1680–1740). Abernethy's first published sermon, marking the accession of George I, was a call for moral reform; it also argued for a consent theory of monarchical authority and was the first of his pieces defending a protestant conception of liberty. Abernethy's opposition to central regulation had, by the end of 1719, extended to regulation in belief, when his sermon Religious Obedience Founded on Personal Persuasion followed closely upon the Salters' Hall debate in London. By emphasizing the fallibility of human assemblies and reserving to all believers the right to search scripture for themselves he saw himself as the authentic upholder of the Reformation. Two volumes of discourses on the being and attributes of God began as sermon series, but for a sophisticated public. The first, Discourses Concerning the Being and Natural Perfections of God, was published before his death in 1740; the second, Discourses concerning the Perfections of God; in which his Holiness, Goodness, and other Moral Attributes, are Explained and Proved, posthumously in 1742. DNB In a full leather binding. Externally, rubbed with slight loss. The hinges are slightly strained but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Extremely bright and clean throughout for the age of this book. A remarkable work. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
