He made his name as an entertaining anti-clerical writer. The satirical Le Roi des Montagnes (1856; translated into English by Mary Louise Booth as The King of the Mountains, and by Tom Taylor as The Brigand and His Banker, for a dramatised version) is the best-known of his novels. About Edmond is also a comic writer as he knows how satire. He became famous with his new style to the quick, clear and concise, and his novels that evoke imaginary situations, often inspired by the progress of science. Weddings of Paris (1856), The King of the Mountains (1857), The Man with the Broken Ear (1862) or The Province Marriages (1868) are all bestsellers. In a half calf binding with marbled paper boards.
