Includes an introduction to the geography of each region, its history, places of interest, and various successful routes through the counties. The section on Chester has been almost entirely rewritten for the third edition of this handbook, and numerous sectional maps have been added. With seven plates of maps, a folding map, and a map insert that can be found in a pocket to the rear, collated and complete. The cluster of pages between pages 128 and 144 is disbound but present. Includes the map of Chester. Prior owner's ink inscription to the half title, 'R. Marsham - Townsend', dated July 31 1900. Son of the Earl of Romney, Robert Marsham-Townsend was a fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, and worked in the Diplomatic Service from 1855 to 1859. Adverts to the pastedowns and endpapers to the front and the rear. Four pages of adverts between the title page and the preface. With a forty eight page catalogue of adverts for other travel guides published by Murray to the rear. In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with some very light bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, generally firmly bound, although pages pages 128 to 144 are disbound in a cluster, but present.
