A complete set of Pierre Helyot's scarce and important history of religious and monastic orders, lavishly illustrated with striking copper engravings. A scarce complete set in eight volumes of this important study of monastic and military orders in the original French. The first edition published between 1714 and 1719. The first two volumes printed by Jean-Baptiste Coignard of Paris for Joseph Derbais of Douay; the rest of the volumes were published by Coignard under his own name. A relevant study to this day, containing a vast array of information regarding the history of the religious orders up to the end of the seventeenth century, with detailed information on the foundation and the decline of various groups. Written by Hippolyte Hélyot (christened Pierre at his birth) in a span of over two decades.
