That women should have votes is so novel a proposal, and therefore, to untrained minds, so absurd, that few can refrain from indulging in what are meant to be jokes and witticisms&apos.Anthony presents moral and practical arguments for women's suffrage, and concludes with the notice 'we do not believe that one half of mankind was born to exercise unlimited power over the other half', and that not until the vote is extended to women 'we shall see a more equal distribution of happiness&apos.With a former owner's inscription to the head of the front free endpaper. From the library of Lord Raglan, Fitzroy John Somerset. Raglan"s great-great-grandfather was Field Marshal Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan and hero of the Battle at Inkerman and Alma in the Crimean War. He also served as military secretary to the Duke of Wellington. He died in the Crimea in 1855. The house in which the library was situated, Cefntilla Court, was purchased by the Raglan Memorial committee for his descendants. Lord Raglan was a keen collector of anthropology and folklore, with many of the works in his extensive library focusing upon this topic. In the publisher's original cloth binding.
