The first work present here is the very scarce 1746 'Memoirs of the Life of Lord Lovat', with half title and engraved portrait frontispiece.Excitingly, this very scarce work was published the year prior to Lovat's execution, following his capture in 1746. Lovat's execution in 1747 was the last public beheading in the UK.The ESTC records six variants of this work published by M. Cooper in 1746, without precedence. This copy is ESTC reference T39147, with page 3 catchword 'set', as called for, and with title page ornament of a bust with a semi-circular frame of flowers. The second work is the scarce 1747 'A Candid and Impartial Account of the Behaviour of Simon Lord Lovat', providing a brief account of his life between the time the death warrant was delivered, and the day of his execution, including 'A faithful Narrative of the particular Incidents which happen"d that Day in the Tower, in the Sheriff"s Apartment, and on the Scaffold&apos.ESTC reference N4817. With a single leaf of advertisements to the rear. Lacking half title.Two fascinating and very scarce contemporary memoirs of a key figure in the 1745 uprising, who held the nickname 'the Fox' due to his frequent changes of allegiance. Rebound in quarter calf, with marbled paper covered boards, and endpapers renewed. Externally, fine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, but generally clean and bright.
