 - The Ingoldsby Legends or Mirth and Marvels Popular Edition

Title: The Ingoldsby Legends or Mirth and Marvels Popular Edition
Description: London, Richard Bentley & Son, 1889. Cloth. A smart copy of Barham's popular Ingoldsby Legends, illustrated by various artists. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding, with the binder's label to the front paste down. 16 plates. Collated complete. Ink inscription to the front free end paper. The Ingoldsby Legends is a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry written supposedly by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of an English clergyman named Richard Harris Barham. Although based on real legends and mythology, they are mostly humorous parodies of medieval folklore and poetry. The legends were first printed during 1837 as a regular series in the magazine Bentley's Miscellany and later in New Monthly Magazine. They were very popular and were compiled into books. In publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally very smart, though a little bumped to the extremities. Colour is good and gilt is bright. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with the odd spot to the first and last pages, and to the fore edge, affecting the occasional page. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: George Cruikshank; John Leech; John Tenniel; Richard Harris Barham; et al. Very Good Indeed .
