A very scarce work containing a short story titled 'A Walk with the Angel of Death,' the first and only edition, published anonymously, found in only three institutional libraries. The short story is preceded by a neatly handwritten dedication that reads: 'My son, let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of your thine heart: so shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the light of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart: and learn not unto thine own understanding. In all thy wats acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths,' dated 1869; It is followed by thirty-six leaves neatly inscribed to recto with a memoir of Jeannie Elizabeth Chetwynd Carr, who died at the age of only 29. This moving record of her last days was written by her husband Francis Culling Carr-Gomm to one of their sons; from the opening paragraph: "Among your beloved mother's last wishes none was more frequently, or more earnestly urged upon me than this - 'Do not let the children forget me. My children, my darlings, oh! do not let them forget me.' I can hardly now think it possible that any of you could forget her - so closely has her constant love folded her in all your hearts."Featuring six original photographs mounted in, four of which are portraits. To rear is bound are two poems titled 'Just as Thou Art: the Invitation' and 'Just as I Am: the Acceptance' printed to recto and verso. In a full straight up grain morocco binding signed Parkins & Gotto with decorative embossing to boards and spine. Externally smart with minor shelf wear, rubbed to joints, spine, and boards.
