It was founded by Christophe Plantin, a French bookbinder who fled from Paris to Antwerp after at least one book printer was burned at the stake for heresy. In a full calf binding, amateurly rebacked with cloth sewn to the spine, with cloth adhered to the boards. Cloth to the boards is discoloured, worn, and lifting in places, heavier to the rear board, where the loss reveals paper. Loss of leather to the rear board, heavier to the tail of the board where the loss has exposed the wooden boards below. Marks and rubbing to the boards and spine. Loss to the top third of the cloth backstrip. Puncture marks to the boards signify that there used to be clasps. Hinges have failed, boards held to the spine by a little cloth. Paste downs are worn with some ink notes and doodles to the front paste down. Internally, binding is strained, more particularly to the rear where some pages are detaching to the final fifth of the text. Pages are age-toned with some spots and marks. Leaf A2 to the front is worn and detaching. Bound without the title page, and leaves K3, Bb3, Ee3, and the second leaf A1, and the text ends on a second leaf C4 with some pages intended to follow. The occasional ink note to the margins. Tidemarks to the pages to the gutter and head, moving slightly to some gatherings, lighter to some gatherings. Closed tear to leaf E3. Leaf of notes adhered to the verso of leaf H5. Repair to the margin of leaf H6, V2, and k4. To leaf Q7 a leaf adhered from another edition of the work, with a plate of Jesus at the Last Dinner. Chip to leaf C3 of the rear, leaf C4 torn and worn significantly. Leaves *1 and *1 are significantly repaired to the margins. Fair . Ill.: Not Stated. Fair .
