Stanley was a noted explorer, mainly known for his exploration of Central Africa and his successful search for missionary David Livingstone, as well as for his search of the sources of the Nile and Congo rivers, his command of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, and the work he undertook for King Leopold II of the Belgians, resulting in the occupation of the Congo Basin region - which eventually helped his name being regarded with with much controversy due to the atrocities which were perpetrated against the native people. Dated from Jisc. Illustrated with full page plates in black and white. In the original publisher's full cloth binding with gilt to the edges. Externally generally sound with a light shelf wear and minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, a minor chipping and loss to the head of the spine. Spine has darkened. Internally, the binding is slightly tender, holding firm. Lacking the tissue guard to the frontispiece.
