Anon - One Hundred Useful and Inexpensive Cookery Recipes

Title: One Hundred Useful and Inexpensive Cookery Recipes
Description: Not Stated, Bile Bean Manufacturing Co. 1909. Brochure/Pamphlet. A fascinating little pamphlet cookery work published by Bile Bean Manufacturing Co. Containing simple recipes, handy measurements and advice on various illnesses and how to avoid and cure them. This work is effectively an advertisement for the company that produced it, Charles Forde's Bile Beans for Biliousness. It contains testimonials from people who were crippled by all sorts of afflictions, seemingly 'cured' by Bile Beans.First produced in the late 1890s, Bile Beans were a laxative and tonic. The creator, 'Charles Forde', claimed to use ingredients sourced from a previously unidentified vegetable known to Aboriginal Australians. The Bile Beans purported to purify the blood and disperse unwanted fat. However, in reality it contained common pharmaceutical ingredients such as menthol and liquorice. They were found to be fraudulently advertised during a Scottish court case in 1905; however, they were sold until the 1980s.A fascinating piece of advertising - and false medicinal - history. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally generally smart, with a little discolouration to the covers. Internally firmly bound. Pages are a touch age-toned, but clean. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
