One of its functions was to provide readers with educated, topical talking points, and advice on how to conduct conversations and social interactions in a polite manner. In keeping with the values of Enlightenment philosophies of their time, the authors of The Spectator promoted family, marriage and courtesy, with essays commenting on the sublime, the social, and the political.It became a major venue for the spread of Enlightenment ideas, and was one of the first publications to appeal directly to a female readership.
