 - Novum Testamentum

Title: Novum Testamentum
Description: Oxford, Oxford University Press, 1834. Leather. A Greek edition of the New Testament, used in class by some mischievous Victorian student of Cheam School. This work comprises the New Testament in Ancient Greek, intended for use by students of classics. The charm is in the cheeky annotations and sketches, added by a former pupil and including a watercolour drawing of possibly a teacher, decorative calligraphy, and a detailed sketch of a hot air balloon over a crowd. Signed by G. H. Verney, Cheam, 1849. To the rear of the work, there is a list of nine of the pupil's teachers, alongside some rough drawings and the words 'Brute', 'Middling', 'Cheat', and 'Beast' used to describe all nine. A fascinating insight into the mind of a Victorian schoolboy.Cheam School was founded in 1645, and was attended by the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and his son Prince Charles.Belonged to George Hope Verney (1842-1896), designer of four-player chess, writer on chess, and the son of Sir Harry Verney, a soldier and politician who later wed the sister of Florence Nightingale. In a half calf binding. Externally generally smart, with just minor rubbing to the spine and a few marks to the boards. Doodles to the verso of the front endpaper and blank, annotations to the rear endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound, with front hinge straining slightly but firm. Pages are bright and clean, with a few doodles scattered. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
