Description: Not Stated, Not Stated, 1889. Paperback. An extremely scarce French handbook detailing how to behave before the Japanese imperial court used during a visit in the late nineteenth century. France and Japan were important partners during the latter half of the nineteenth century, in terms of economy as well as military and other means. France relied on Japanese art for inspiration through Japonism and its effect on impressionism, whilst Japan required France's help in modernisation, particularly of the Army and Navy. A French military mission was dispatched to Japan in 1884 until 1889, and helped in shaping the Japanese Army. This pamphlet was produced during the Meiji period, commenced 1868, and it details how one should present oneself before certain Japanese officials: in private with the Emperor, when meeting the Emperor's wife, and when presented before the Emperor's children. This work is in the French language, with a Japanese translation at the rear. One of a kind; a fascinating piece of political history. In paper wraps. Externally very smart; the sewn binding has worn away externally, leaving some marks. There is some chipping to the head and tail of the spine and wear to extremities, with a small tear to the rear cover. Internally firmly bound, pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
