Aikin practised as a physician before turning purely to literary pursuits in 1798. His poems, or 'English songs' draw inspiration from ancient Latin and Greek verse.An 'Essay on Song-Writing' is prefixed to the verses.This first edition is bound in full calf leather, with delicate gilt spines and edges and marbled endpapers.
