This work is an outspoken call to war against Spain, in opposition to Walpole's policy of peace. This poem originally appeared in 'The Gentleman's Magazine' under the title 'A British Philippic' prior to its separate publication. Collated, this copy is lacking the plate. Detailed headpiece to the first leaf of the work. Disbound. ESTC reference no: T50972. This edition predates a re-issued edition entitled 'A British Philippic' with a new title page and textual alterations. Mark Akenside was an English poet and physician. He attended the Royal Free Grammar School of Newcastle, and a dissenting academy in the town. prior to being sent to the University of Edinburght to study theology with a view to becoming a minister. Other works by him include 'The Virtuoso, in imitation of Spenser's style and stanza&apos. He is best known for his work 'The Pleasures of the Imagination&apos. Disbound. Externally, chipped to the edges. Pages are generally bright with scattered spots. Fold to the centre of the work. Final leaf is detached but present. Title leaf is loosening.
